Do I Actually Need To Do That RIGHT NOW?

This simple phrase is one of my keys to avoid overwhelm.
Do I Actually Need To Do That RIGHT NOW?
I ask myself this. It’s best used when I get caught up in a should spiral. You know them, the times you end up thinking:
“Oh I can’t release a book because I don’t have a head shot and I don’t have a homepage for my books but also I haven’t updated my newsletter recently and I should update the pages before I send out my newsletter so that people can look at it”.
STOP!
Ask yourself if you really NEED to be doing that thing right now. The actual, specific NEED for immediate work is usually quite clear if you can break the overwhelm train of thought. Focus on your NEED to find the task to do first.
